Hi, I am Dee Cranswick!
Labour Law Practitioner
About Me
I was born in Harare, Zimbabwe and spent my school years at Townsend High School. I also studied for a while in America. After which, I attended UCT and obtained my law degree. I am a true blue Ikey tiger. During my time studying I discovered that helping people find their work-life balance is a passion of mine, which has led me to pursue a career that allows me to continue the work I love.

Passions

Small business, my work, my family, eco-tourism, saving the planet, “sticking up for the underdog” and helping people restore their balance by enabling opportunities.

Values

Family, Loyalty, Integrity, Love and Care, Fairness and Balance

Hobbies

I collect shells, read adventure novels, or murder mysteries, hike in the mountains, go trail-jogging (slowly), I love adventures and exploring new places and I drink red wine (slowly). I enjoy all sorts of music and love nature and the wild.

Background
My work journey has taken me through a variety of roles associated with my core profession of employment: law. This includes consulting, litigation, mediation, skills training, conflict management, facilitation, strategist with Boards of Directors, supporting non-profits in trusteeship roles and last but certainly not least customer service.

I see myself as "an enabler", helping clients to find solutions to their challenges via innovative thinking and taking ownership of the outcome. My vision is to support people in their journey of learning, so that they do have choice in their lives. Part of my commitment to others is also contributing to transformation in South Africa. Not just in theory but actually making a physical difference.

So, we have also developed an intensive, demanding and successful work-bridging program, which we offer at our Velisa Africa Academy in the Data Technologies arena. I strongly believe in job creation and entrepreneurship and have always enjoyed working within the small to medium business sector, because if this sector thrives, the economy thrives. Now in addition to my consulting roles, I am also a proud guesthouse owner in St Francis Bay, meeting people from all over the world. I enjoy being busy and I enjoy life! I am always looking for opportunities, but that is part of what allows me to maintain my happiness.

I have the expertise and ability to manage the business as well as deal confidently with all stakeholders, i.e. shareholders, employees, suppliers, and customers. I believe that we are all on a journey and the Velisa team operates as facilitators to guide our learners: so that wherever possible we can assist people to walk their road both successfully and with a sense of personal achievement.

Velisa Africa

I have been assisting employers and employees for over 30 years as a legal representative, mediator, and facilitator. I have strong negotiation skills and am well-known in Cape Town and Johannesburg as being totally committed to a cause in which I believe. Having been involved in precedent-setting cases, I have become passionate about establishing fairness and balance in the workplace, so as to assist parties to avoid the “pain” of litigation.

IR Insights

I run a beautiful bed and breakfast in St. Francis Bay with my husband.  Cycads on Sea is a relaxing Guest House with 5 double en-suite bedrooms, described by the Portfolio Collection as “Great comfort- Refined comforts and added extras, with thoughtful touches."

Cycads on Sea

I started a foundation called the Ithemba Women Community Development Fund. The protection of women from violence, exploitation, abuse, and neglect is a core area of work for the Community Development Foundation, Western Cape (CDF WCape).  Grim prospects and challenges facing women and children brought about the idea of “integrated health and wellbeing for all” to the fore.

Solutions Engineer & Perl Programmer

Dee is a professional but easily approachable person. She can work with different kinds of people, like all races or ages. From these few months in her company as a student, I have seen that she could act like a mother when I need one and also as CEO if I needed a CEO's advise.

Sanele Mpanza Trainee - City of Mhlathuze

Dee was referred to me after I had been informed of a possible retrenchment by Telkom SA in 2002. I immediately found her to be highly intelligent with the ability to present various scenarios.  She takes absolutely no nonsense from the opposition. I would have her represent me any-day.
